How a university campus must be: WU Campus in Wien
In 2013 Wien acquires a new University Campus and at the same time a new attractive place to visit for architecture lovers and surely it has became a new architectural symbol of the city.
With six buildings on 100.000 square meters, is currently the largest campus for economic science in Europe, as well as the most innovative one.
The buildings were designed by some of the most famous architectural firms around the world:
Zaha Hadid has developed the “Library & Learning Center”
In the new campus the amazing Library complex designed by Zaha Hadid stands out above all the other buildings and around it are grouped them all. This futuristic architecture immediately arises to the eye and it is recognizable by the large volume overhanging above the plaza.
CRABstudio is the author of the project for the Department D3 and the administration building
The Atelier Hitoshi Abe designed the D2 Department and the “Student Center”
Estudio Carme Pinós has made the building of the Department D4
The building is created from the particular arrangement of some parallelograms intersecting to create a system of paths that allow to ensure a high level of usability of space and integration with the rest of the campus. The facade is characterized by specific vertical cuts that give dynamism to the facades.
No.Mad Arquitectos has designed the ”Executive Academy”
BU Sarchitektur is the project manager for the building of the Department of D1 and the “Student Center”
The facade of the whole buildingr is made of Corten steel, which with time will form a protective, colored patina. The tall, monolithic block on the right-hand side contains the multifunctional auditorium center and through an atrium, students can access a café and the study areas, arranged in a spiral pattern around the atrium.
All buildings are energy efficient and designed to be in A class. The energetic optimization is achieved through a dynamic simulation of the behavior of buildings considering even shading and the influence of the winds. Heating is achieved by heat pumps supplemented, during periods of high load, by the district heating of the city of Vienna. Geothermal energy is used even for summer cooling.
The new campus is spacious and equipped with bars, bakeries, restaurants, a supermarket and sports facilities. According to the architects, all that encourages communication, improves the flow of ideas and “create a stimulating working environment for researchers”.

P.S. Austrian students do not pay, at least at the moment, the university tees for the first five years so if you are a student fascinated by the place, economics subjects and Germanyou can sign up by paying just € 363.63 for a semester! The reason? In Austria people think that, especially in a time of crisis like the one we are experiencing, it would be unfair to pay for education.
